Google Gemini: how it builds answers

Google's assistant, grounded in Google Search and Maps data.

What it is

Gemini is Google's assistant app and model family. For questions about real businesses it uses Google Search grounding: the model runs searches, reads results and can pull in Google Business Profile details such as reviews, ratings and opening hours.

How it retrieves and cites

Gemini's grounding runs live Google searches and uses the normal Google index built by Googlebot. Google-Extended only controls whether your content trains Gemini models; it does not affect grounding. Local answers lean heavily on Business Profile data and review counts.

Grounded answers include source chips linking to the pages used. Gemini favours authoritative, well-structured pages and shows ratings from Google reviews prominently, so businesses with few reviews are often omitted even if their site is strong.

Crawlers and robots.txt

Five tips to be recommended by Google Gemini

  1. Keep your Google Business Profile complete: categories, hours, services, photos, and reply to reviews.
  2. Match name, address and phone exactly across your site, profile and directories.
  3. Use LocalBusiness schema with openingHoursSpecification and areaServed.
  4. Publish location pages with real, specific content rather than templated town names.
  5. Earn reviews steadily; Gemini surfaces counts and ratings.

Questions

Is Gemini the same as Google AI Overviews?

No. Gemini is the standalone assistant; AI Overviews are summaries inside Google Search results. They share models and index but behave differently, so Seoptist tracks them separately.

Does blocking Google-Extended hurt my Gemini visibility?

No. Google-Extended only governs model training. Grounded answers use the standard Googlebot index.
